Tarot by Zodiac Sign Interpretations: What Are Tarot and Astrology Reading?

Table of Contents

When reading the Tarot cards, astrology can help us to further our understanding and offer us an opportunity for a more in-depth reading.

Astrology and Tarot can go hand in hand. Both can offer insight and guidance, and both are also often misconstrued as fortune telling- but that isn’t the case. Instead, they can individually be used for perspective on situations and feelings in life. And when combined, they can further our understanding of ourselves and situations.

Each Major Arcana card is linked to a zodiac sign, and each zodiac sign is linked to a major arcana card. However, the cards could represent a couple of different signs and vice versa. This is because the scope of both cards and signs are wide, and can sometimes overlap.

As always, take this guide as inspiration, and let your intuition guide your understanding.

Each sign has one primary major arcana card and one secondary major arcana card. There are several minor arcana cards that are also associated with the signs. However, I don’t go into too much detail on them and have included the minor arcana cards for reference only.

To kick things off, we will begin with the fiery Aries zodiac sign.

Aries – The Emperor

Aries

As well as the primary Emperor association, Aries can also be connected with the following major and minor tarot cards:

About Aries and The Emperor Tarot Card

The Aries sign is primarily linked with The Emperor tarot card. The Emperor is authoritative energy, that achieves goals and is loyal through the toughest of times. The Emperor can be likened to a healthy father figure. As we all know, this can include stern discipline as well as wise guidance.  The Emperor is a figure to lean on, to trust, and to look to when seeking leadership.

Secondary Aries Card: The Tower

The Tower is one of the most feared tarot cards. Why? Well, because it signifies transformation. The transformation can come with a bang, a crash, and chaos. But that’s not always the case, it depends on how you play your cards (so to speak).

The Tower represents the fiery side of Aries, the potential destruction that precedes change. In the same breath, the Tower is here to remind you that you can handle all the changes life can throw at you. Most of the time, The Tower indicates that the change will be an unexpected one, leaving you in the midst of mayhem. Aries has a reputation for being impulsive and being reckless, and this is represented by The Tower card.

Aries Minor Arcana Cards:

Taurus – The Hierophant

Taurus - The Hierophant

Taurus can be connected to minor and major tarot cards. The primary card associated with Taurus is The Hierophant card.

About Taurus and The Hierophant Tarot Card

The earthy Taurus energy is grounded, steadfast, and rooted in knowledge. The Hierophant card is connected to the lineage of knowledge as it passes through tradition from master to student. This is a very structured and grounded energy, much like the Taurus zodiac sign.

The Hierophant is a learned soul, known for wise counsel, and for being a stickler for tradition. Similarly, Taurus zodiac energy is noble and strong. Taurus will often be a magnetic and loyal person that loves the comforts this life can offer.

The Hierophant

The Hierophant is representative of the positive Taurus qualities. The Hierophant is connected to a wise man of great and solid standing but keeps his focus on spiritual aspirations.

This is similar to how Taurus sees the world and often learns through the accumulation of material wealth.

Taurus Minor Arcana Cards

  • King of Pentacles: Aries/Taurus
  • Knight of Swords: Taurus/Gemini

Gemini –  The Lovers

Gemini

Gemini has two major arcana cards, The Lovers is the primarily associated card while The Magician is also connected to Gemini.

About Gemini and The Lovers Tarot Card

Everyone knows Gemini as the twins of the zodiac. And if you didn’t, you do now. The Gemini sign has a strong social energy that seeks intellectual stimulation. Their charisma is famed and they are often among the free-spirited. Similarly, you often find people with strong gemini influence allergic to routine, and always ready to push the boundaries.

The Lovers

Perhaps the most obvious similarity between The Lovers and Gemini is duality. The Lovers represent duality with the couple depicted on the card while Gemini is the sign of the twins.

And what do two halves make? One whole. The Lovers card illustrates how two equals come together to form a divine whole. The Lovers card is also representative of a choice- taking the high road, or the easy road. The Lovers card energy encourages you to weigh up all your options with careful consideration before making a decision.

Secondary Gemini Tarot Card: The Magician

The Magician is one of my favorite cards- let’s see how it represents Gemini’s energy. The Magician is not held back by boundaries of perception because The Magician has the ability to use his will for manifestation. This is connected to Gemini by the zodiac sign’s ability to transcend perceived limitations and achieve whatever they put their efforts towards.

The Magician is often the misunderstood oddball earlier in life, but later in life, as their understanding grows, so does The Magian’s reverence. This is similar to the Gemini sign- at first, you may be perplexed by the seemingly contrasting aspects of this sign. But once the shock wears off, you tend to sit in awe at the magic Gemini seem to exude due to their sheer willpower and acceptance of limitations.

The following minor tarot cards are connected to the Gemini zodiac sign:

  • Queen of Cups: Gemini/Cancer
  • Knight of Swords: Taurus/Gemini

Cancer – The Chariot

Cancer

About Cancer and The Chariot Tarot Card

The watery Cancer zodiac sign is often family orientated, emotional, and empathetic. Not as emotional as Pieces, Cancer can be likened to the crab with a tough-as-nails exterior, yet soft and sympathetic on the inside.

Cancer energy is primarily represented by The Chariot card and is joined by The High Priestess as well.

The Chariot Tarot Card

The Chariot is a forward-moving card and has strong energy. The Chariot’s keywords are also connected to decisiveness, success, and action. The Cancer zodiac sign has a knack for communication, loyalty, and dedication.

With Cancer and The Chariot, we see the energy of a steadfast course, and handling whatever life throws your way. Those people with strong cancer energy in their charts will often have a reservoir of intuitive power to propel themselves ahead.

The High Priestess

The High Priestess is connected with intuition and the domain of the subconscious. She has a divine feminine energy, as you would expect given she is The High Priestess. But the intuition and subconscious reign is almost highly empathetic, which is similar to Cancer.

Cancer Minor Tarot Cards

Cancer’s main Major Arcana card is The Chariot, but The High Priestess is also strongly connected to the zodiac sign. The following minor arcana cards are also associated with Cancer:

Leo –  Strength

Leo

About Leo and Strength Tarot Card

Leo is charismatic energy that is also strong and loyal. Leos are not typically ones to hide in the shadows, instead, their strong personalities help them to thrive in the spotlight. Their passion is often what drives them in their career and life in general.

The Strength card depicts how compassion and calm can overcome that which we fear. The Strength card is connected to the more relaxed aspects of the Leo zodiac sign. But it is also descriptive of Leo’s fierce drive to do what they need to for achieving their goals.

While the Strength card is the primary card associated with the Leo zodiac sign, The Sun tarot card is also associated with the lion of the zodiac signs.

Secondary Leo Tarot Card: The Sun

The Sun tarot card is all about warmth, purpose, and passion. The Sun tarot card’s energy is strong yet friendly and optimistic and will work with passion and purpose to achieve goals. This is a perfect description of the Leo energy as well.

Leo Minor Arcana Tarot Cards

Leo is the lion and fire of the zodiac. It is primarily associated with the Strength tarot card and its secondary card is The Sun. The following minor tarot cards are also representational of Leo’s energy.

Virgo’s Tarot Card: The Hermit

Virgo

About Virgo and The Hermit Tarot Card

Virgo is another strong earth sign connected with knowledge and wealth. They are an attractive sign, often blessed with abundance and understanding nature. The Virgo sign is connected to looking within to understand their spiritual path, which is similar to the energy brought by The Hermit card.

The Hermit tarot card has an energy that feels wise, yet detached from the world. The Hermit reminds me of the wise wizard that lives in the forest or mountains, as often depicted in movies and novels.

The Hermit has to detach himself from society, because it is through this isolation that he learns and understands the balance between spirituality and logic. And that balance is the key, the very same balance that we see represented by the Virgo zodiac sign. Another similarity is the trait to be self-sustaining.

If you are a Virgo through and through, then you will feel an affinity with The Hermit card. The Hermit brings a message to put the brakes on- don’t rush through your life. Find your purpose, and let it drive you. The Hermit imagery suggests that you are tired of society, and of the material world. The Hermit needs to retreat and spend time directing his focus inward. When he does, a childlike innocence reemerges, so that he can learn to see life with joy once more.

Virgo Minor Arcana Tarot Cards

Aside from the primary tarot card of The Hermit, Virgo is also associated with these minor arcana tarot cards.

  • Queen of Swords: Virgo/Libra
  • Knight of Pentacles: Leo/Virgo

Libra’s Tarot Card: Justice

Libra

About Libra and The Justice Tarot Card

The zodiac sign of Libra is an understanding and balanced energy. The Libra zodiac often values his or her own judgment before anyone else’s. Their own inner sense of right and wrong guide their decisions. If partnerships are formed they are likely to be stable and strong. The Libra sign is connected to the scales of justice, which makes it easy for us to understand why the Justice tarot card is its primary representation.

The Justice card’s imagery depicts a woman with the scales of justice. The scales represent far more than justice, they represent balance in general, as well as reason and logic. The lady of Justice preserves these ideas in society.

The connection between Libra and the Justice tarot card is clear, both are honest, understand consequences, and use a balance of reason and intuition to make a judgment.

The Justice card also asks you to weigh up your needs against your wants. If you want to be fair and justified, you need to have a balanced mindset. This means not putting either logic or emotion aside, but using them both.

While Justice is the major arcana card for Libra, it is also represented by The Empress tarot card.

Secondary Libra Tarot Card: The Empress

The Empress tarot card is the divine mother of the tarot- she is divine feminine energy, Mother Earth herself. The Empress card brings us a message for self-love, and this is represented with the Libra zodiac sign as well. Both The Empress and the Libra zodiac are connected to the spiritual side of life.

Libra Minor Arcana Tarot Cards

  • King of Cups: Libra/Scorpio
  • Queen of Swords: Virgo/Libra

Scorpio’s Tarot Card: Death

Scorpio

About Scorpio and the Death Tarot Card

Are we even surprised that the Scorpio zodiac is associated with the Death tarot card?

Scorpio zodiac’s energy is secretive, mysterious, passionate, and if you get on the wrong side of their tail, it can be downright frightening. But, if you make friends with a Scorpio, you will find them to be an understanding friend and a powerful ally.

While the word ‘death’ is likely to release negative connotations, put these fearsome thoughts aside. The Death tarot card can be a positive card. As we are all too well aware, the Death card represents endings. But it also represents beginnings too. Scorpios are well suited to adjusting according to circumstance, and they are able to view things from several perspectives. The Scorpio zodiac sign is easily adaptable to change, which is one of the primary messages of the Death tarot card.

Every ending can be viewed as a new beginning, a concept embodied by the Scorpio sign as well as the Death card.

Both Scorpio and Death embrace change and crave transformation.

Scorpio Minor Arcana Tarot Cards

  • King of Cups: Libra/Scorpio
  • Knight of Wands: Scorpio/Sagittarius

Sagittarius

About Sagittarius and Temperance Tarot Card

The Sagittarius zodiac sign is associated with independence. This zodiac sign enjoys stimulation, and they are often globe trotters and intrepid travelers. They learn by exposing themselves to new places, people, and ideas. They are tolerant but headstrong.

The temperance tarot card encompasses a message of moderation and achieving harmony by balancing masculine and feminine energy. The connection between Temperance and Sagittarius is demonstrated by the strong leadership qualities this sign embodies. Both depict the necessity for mediation, moderation, awareness, and understanding.

Sagittarius Minor Tarot Cards

Sagittarius is primarily connected to the Temperance tarot card but is also symbolized by the following minor cards:

Capricorn: The Devil

Capricorn

About Capricorn and The Devil Tarot Card

The Capricorn sign is primarily associated with the Devil card. As a Capricorn myself, this comes as no surprise. A typical Capricorn is usually reserved and introverted, with a sharp mind that slowly warms up to outsiders. The typical Capricorn is often seen as a focused individual, striving for security and success.

Don’t be afraid of this card- The Devil is not an evil card. In a traditional understanding, The Devil Tarot card reminds us how to embrace our shadow side and use it for good. It also is a good reminder to steer clear of addictive behavior and material attachment.

Aside from reminding us not to indulge too much in our shadow side, The Devil card also encourages us to use these so-called negative aspects to deepen our spiritual understanding.

Overall, The Devil card invites us to understand the darkest aspects of ourselves, so we remove negative things that hold us back by the root. Understanding why we have negative aspects is crucial for spiritual understanding and transformation.

Once we understand ourselves and commit to our goals, we get The World- contentment after achieving our goals.

The World

The World Tarot card is the secondary card associated with the Capricorn zodiac sign. As the final card in the Major Arcana series, The World is a card of enlightenment, successful achievements, and contentment. The World card symbolizes Capricorn’s successful nature.

Capricorn Minor Arcana Tarot Cards

The primary tarot card is The Devil, but Capricorn is also associated with the following minor tarot cards.

  • King of Swords: Capricorn/Aquarius
  • Queen of Pentacles: Sagittarius/Capricorn

Aquarius: The Star

Star

About Aquarius and The Star

The Aquarius zodiac sign is the dreamer. They are often driven by dreams and imagination. Both The Star and The Fool symbolise the Aquarius sign, although The Star is the primary card.

The Star represents optimism and inspiration. Similar to Aquarius, The Star also symbolizes hope, peace, and our dreams. The Star also reminds us to follow our hopes and desires- much the same as an Aquarian does.

Secondary Aquarius Tarot Card: The Fool

The Fool is highly representational of the Aquarius sign. The Fool has several aspects that are similar to a true aquarian nature, including cheerfulness and carelessness. The Aquarius is often the daydreamer, focused on what could be instead of what is. This is clearly represented by the energy carried by The Fool.

Aquarius Minor Arcana Tarot Cards

Aquarius is primarily represented by The Star card, but the following minor cards are also highly representational of the Aquarius zodiac sign.

Pisces: The Moon

The Moon

About Pieces and The Moon

Pisces is an intuitive sign, and will often be your most emotional friend. But they are also magical people, who give their love freely. The Pieces will often romanticize situations before getting to grips with all aspects and are primarily represented by The Moon tarot card.

The Moon tarot card reminds us to listen to our intuition and get into a rhythm with life’s cycles. The Moon directs the tides and has a significant effect on the ocean’s movement. The Moon tarot card reminds us to pay attention to our moods, emotions, intuition, and feelings. But, at the same time, it is wise to allow the emotions to come, and then to let them go.

While wisdom can be found in the waters of emotion, there is a danger of drowning in our feelings if we don’t respect the cyclical nature of all things- including our emotions. The Moon card also reminds us to pay attention to the gentle tugs we feel, this is where we can get our answers from.

Secondary Pieces Tarot Card: The High Priestess

The High Priestess is the lady of the subconscious. She commands understanding of the mysteries that guide our intuition and subconscious. The Pisces sign is often guided by these intuitive tugs, which is where we can see the connection with the High Priestess tarot card.

The Fool

The Fool represents naivety and optimism, which, if you’ve ever met a true Pieces in person, you will know that naivety comes all too easily for them. But aside from naivety, both The Fool and Pieces are pure, they don’t get bogged down by the evils of the world. They remind us to keep our hearts light and to love our fellow beings on this earth.

Pisces Minor Arcana Tarot Cards

While The Moon is the primary tarot card for Pieces, the following minor cards are also associated with Pieces.

  • Queen of Wands: Pisces/Aries
  • Knight of Cups: Aquarius/Pisces

Remember, use your own intuition when deciphering tarot cards. There are a million ways to describe the cards and their associated zodiac signs- I write from my own well of knowledge, study, and intuitive understanding. The more you work with your cards, the deeper your own well will become, and you’ll eventually find yourself tapping into a wealth of wisdom you didn’t even know you had.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Can there be more than one card associated with a sign?

Answer: There is always more than one card associated. There is one primary, and typically a secondary card. The secondary card can also showcase the successful traits if you’ve moved through the challenges that the primary card introduces. Most of the zodiac signs are represented by two major arcana cards, but a couple of signs only have one major arcana card associated with them.

Question: Can these zodiac associations tell us who our soulmates are?

Answer: There is a card placement in most soulmate spreads that represent the nature of your soulmate. If you ask, “Who is my soulmate”, and draw the Strength card, you might be inclined to only set your sights on people that have Leo as their Sun sign.

However, I do not advise narrowing your mind like this. A person’s zodiac chart can have various placements. Instead, use the tarot and associated zodiac sign as a guide for the type of quality that your soulmate might represent. But remember, don’t lose yourself off by sticking to a steadfast predetermined thought pattern.

Question: Does the tarot card with my zodiac sign represent me?

Answer: The answer is both yes and no. In one perspective, the tarot connected to your zodiac sign most definitely represents you. On the other hand, you shouldn’t limit yourself to that zodiac.

If you are a Capricorn, it can be a daunting thing to feel like you are symbolized by The Devil tarot card. Instead, you should see what the card is trying to show you. In the case of The Devil and Capricorn, the card warns of getting too fixated on material and earthly desires.

Embrace your shadow side and use it to help you in life and your spiritual pursuits. If you are an Aqaurius, both The Star and The Fool remind you to set your sights on your dreams but keep your feet rooted on the earth.

Conclusion

Understanding the connection between the zodiac and the tarot cards can deepen our knowledge and guide our understanding. But remember that this is only a guide, and your intuitive knowledge will help to guide you on your pursuit of spiritual understanding. The messages brought to us by the associated cards can teach us a great deal about ourselves.

The upright position often alludes to the more positive aspects of a zodiac. The reverse contains the messages we need to learn from the more negative aspects of our sign. I use the word negative tentativey.

The reverse is not our ‘bad’ qualities- rather its how we learn in this life. We need these difficulties to learn the lessons, so we can come closer to fufilment. Whether that fufilment is material, spiritual, or both- is entirely up to you.
