6 Card Tarot Spread Guide: Expanding Your Tarot Knowledge

Latest posts by Lou Siday (see all)

I will go through two different spreads in this 6 card Tarot spread guide. A six-card spread is a great way to dive deeper into the cards and get more understanding of the universe.

Now, I see six-card Tarot spreads as the next step from three-card spreads. If you have read my Tarot spread for beginners guide, you know that simple three-card spreads are the best way to get into Tarot.

If you are learning Tarot, I strongly recommend starting with three-card spreads. Then, when you are ready, you can move on to six-card spreads with ease. This is because I have designed the six-card spreads based on the three-card spreads, but with a few additions!

In this Tarot spread guide, I will be using the Modern Way Tarot deck. This is one of my favorite decks, as it is a cool, minimalist twist on the traditional Rider-Waite imagery. But of course, you can use any deck you want for these spreads!

Six-card Tarot Spreads Up Front

My favorite Tarot spread in this guide is the past, present, and future six-card spread. I love how it delves deeper into the traditional three-card spread, illuminating different aspects of our life.

The other Tarot spread I have included in this guide is a general six-card spread that examines love, career, and home life.

Past, Present, Future Six-card Tarot Spread

6 Card Tarot Spread Guide

You probably have heard of the past, present, and future Tarot spread by now. This three-card spread is super popular for both beginner and expert readers, as it is simple yet effective.

For this six-card Tarot spread, we take the past, present, and future three-card spread and add three more cards to gain an in-depth understanding of the different influences in our lives. The three cards added to the spread are advice and action cards.

The six cards pulled in this spread refer to:

  • Card one: Past
  • Card two: Present
  • Card three: Future
  • Card four: What needs to be left in the past
  • Card five: How to enhance the present
  • Card six: How to move forward to the best possible future

Let’s go through an example to see how we can understand the different cards in the different positions. I will pick six cards and examine what they might mean to me!

Past

The first card represents the past. It usually signifies something that defined your past, which may still affect you now.

For this card, I received the Ten of Wands. This card reflects burden and strain and usually pops up when you take on too much. So, what does that mean for the past?

This card suggests that there were times in my past when I felt burnt out from my responsibilities. As a child, I always wanted to support my loved ones when they were suffering, but I know I was too young to be able to. This left me feeling exhausted and confused.

I felt sad getting this card for my past, as I do know the issues raised still bother my close family. They regret the burdens I had to deal with as a child. The Tarot is reminding me that I continuously need to work through past issues to create a healthy and happy present and future.

Present

For my present card, I received the World. This is the last card of the Major Arcana and reflects completion and fulfillment. It usually pops up when a chapter of your life is over and a new one is on its way.

I thought it was interesting how this card appeared as my present. At first, I didn’t understand what it meant, as I didn’t feel as if there had been a major completion in my life! However, I reflected on my life for a while and realized that I am going through a significant change. I am in my late twenties and establishing myself as an adult. I have left many of my youthful ways in the past, focusing on health and spirituality. My career and the future are at the forefront of my mind, and I think about creating a home and a family.

The World card reminds us that these chapters of our lives might not be so clearly defined. Through growth and work, we change into different people. Sometimes, all we need to do is step back and look at how far we have come!

Future

For my future card, I received the Ace of Cups. When we want to understand the Aces, it is useful to consider the general meaning of the suit. I always feel that the Aces are the suit as their most potent, with their energy fresh and bubbling.

So, the Suit of Cups is all about love and emotions. This suit has a spiritual element, as it often reflects intuition and subconsciousness.

The Ace of Cups reflects fresh, emotional energy with abundant love and happiness. Receiving this card for my future is a great sign, as it suggests that joy and love are coming my way!

What Needs to be Left in the Past

The fourth card pulled reflects what needs to be left in the past. It shows us what is still affecting us and what we need to let go of.

For this card, I received the Ten of Swords. This card is all about painful endings and betrayal and often pops up when someone has backstabbed and hurt you.

So, how can we understand this card in this position? Well, I believe the Tarot to be telling me to let go of any anger and grudges I have. People have let me down in the past and really hurt me. This does affect me to this day, as I often doubt my romantic relationships.

However, the Tarot is telling me that this needs to change. By carrying these issues around with me, the only person I am hurting is myself. It is time to forgive, forget, and move forward.

How to Enhance the Present

The fifth card pulled in this reading reflects how to enhance the present. It is an action card, showing you what you need to do to be your best possible self.

For this card, I received the Hanged Man. This Major Arcana card reflects a time of pausing, waiting, and looking at things from different perspectives. I understand why I have received this card here. It is super important to pause and reflect from time to time, especially when life gets hectic! I also try my best to look at other points of view when making decisions.

How to Move Forward to the Best Possible Future

The final card is another action card that shows you how to move forward to the best possible future. Here, the universe provides advice for a better future.

For this card, I received the Magician. This is a pretty cool card, reflecting the power to manifest and grow. It reminds us of our abilities to get what we want from life with our resources.

I think this card is pretty obvious in this position! The Tarot reminds me of my power and how I need to harness it to create the best possible future.

Love, Career, Home General Six-card Spread

This six-card Tarot spread uses the three-card love, career, and home spread and enhances it. The original three-card spread can be found in my Tarot spreads for beginners guide and takes a look at three different aspects of your life.

I like this spread and use it often for my friends and family!

This six-card Tarot spread allows us to delve a little bit deeper into the different aspects of our lives.

The six cards pulled refer to:

  • Card one: Love
  • Card two: Career
  • Card three: Home
  • Card four: What needs working on regarding love
  • Card five: How to progress in your career
  • Card six: Any issues in your home life

Let’s go through this Tarot spread using example cards. I will pick six cards and relate them to the different positions.

Love

The first card represents your current love life. For this card, I received the Queen of Wands. The Queen of Wands is a court card, meaning we can understand it in a few different ways. The Queen of Wands may represent us, someone we know, or influence and advice.

The Queen of Wands is a creative and passionate individual. They are self-aware, optimistic, and know exactly what to do to achieve their goals.

So, what does this mean regarding love? Well, I believe the Tarot to be reminding me of always embodying the characteristics of the Queen of Wands when it comes to love. I should never forget who I am and where I want to be in life!

Career

For my career card, I received the Star. I love this Major Arcana card as it brings us hope and power. It usually pops up when you have been through a tough time and brings forth the energy of hope and renewal.

When it comes to our career, we can understand the Star as telling us to remain positive and hopeful. It suggests that I have what it takes to be successful. I just need to keep my head up and my eyes on the future!

Family

The third card represents your home life. Now, this doesn’t have to always refer to who lives in your home. It can often represent your friends and loved ones – whoever you see as your ‘home’.

For this card, I received the Ten of Pentacles. This is a really lovely card and represents stability, support, and solid foundations. It can also represent a financial windfall, such as inheritance.

It makes sense why this card has appeared in this position! I am surrounded by supportive and loving friends and family members who help me feel grounded and loved. The Tarot is reminding me to always be grateful for this!

What Needs Working on Regarding Love

The fourth card pulled will highlight any issues you may have in your love life. It is a guidance card, reflecting anything you need to work on.

For this card, I received the High Priestess. This Major Arcana is one of my favorite cards, as it represents intuition and spiritual growth. It reminds us to listen to our gut feelings and stay in tune with our soul.

So, what does this card mean for issues in my love life? I see this card as a reminder to always stay true to who I am. I should always follow my intuition when it comes to love. Perhaps I have not been doing this recently?

How to Progress in your Career

The fifth card pulled is another advice card and shows you what you need to do to progress in your career.

For this card, I received the Three of Wands. This card reflects growth and expansion. It is all about moving forward and putting the groundwork to succeed. It makes sense why the Three of Wands has appeared in this position. I should always be looking toward the future and career progression!

We can link it back to the Star, which appeared in the career position. I believe the Tarot tells me I have the inspiration and creativity, but I need to make sure I am putting in the work to go after my dreams.

Any Issues in Your Home Life

The sixth card pulled represents any issues there might be in your home life. For this card, I received the Two of Cups. A card all about partnership and bonding, what could this mean in this position?

When we receive a positive card in a negative position, we can understand it in two different ways. Either we have too much of the energy of the card, and it is causing problems, or we lack the energy of the card.

With the Two of Cups, both sides have an equal amount of love. It represents balance. So, I believe the Tarot to be telling me that there are issues in my home life regarding balance and equality. Am I putting too much love and affection into a friendship? Or, do I take my loved ones for granted, not giving them the love they deserve?
